Target Rifle Australia Ltd (TRA) is pleased to announce an updated structure for the National Championships, commencing in 2026. To better support athletes, officials, and host clubs, the National Championships will be delivered as three distinctnational events:
- TRA ISSF National Championships
- TRA All Range National Championships
- TRA RBA National Championships
This update is part of TRA’s ongoing commitment to strengthening competition pathways, maintaining a sustainable event calendar, and ensuring that our championship events remain accessible and enjoyable for all participants across Australia.
Why the Change?
Over recent years, the National Championships program has grown significantly. While this growth reflects the strength and depth of our shooting community, it has also placed increasing pressure on our volunteers, event hosts, and athletes, particularly when multiple disciplines and distances were being condensed into a single program.
Separating the Nationals into specialised Championship events allows us to:
- Streamline competition schedules and reduce workload on volunteers.
- Improve athlete focus and preparation by avoiding discipline overlap.
- Align the ISSF program more closely with international competition formats.
- Retain and support an extensive All Range program, including 20m, 50m, 90m, prone and benchrest events.
- Enable more clubs and ranges to host national-level events, especially where ISSF-specific electronic range requirements are not available.
This structure ensures that more events are kept, not fewer and that more clubs and members across the country have opportunities to participate.
About the Three National Championships
1. TRA ISSF National Championships
The ISSF Nationals will continue to focus on ISSF and WSPS events including 10m Air Rifle, 50m Prone, and 50m 3-Position, alongside mixed team and supported rifle categories.
2. TRA All Range National Championships
The All Range Nationals will feature prone and benchrest events contested at multiple distances, including 20m, 50m, and 90m. These are separate events to those in the ISSF Nationals, with their own awards and aggregate championships.
3. TRA RBA National Championships
The RBA Nationals continue as a standalone national championship event, supporting the growing and highly engaged benchrest community. Further details will continue to be communicated through the RBA channels and TRA website.
Hosting and Scheduling
From 2026 onwards:
- All three Nationals may be hosted in the same state, or spread across different states.
- Host location and timing will be determined through TRA’s standard bid and approval process.
- This ensures fairness, opportunity, and flexibility for clubs and event committees nationwide.
